How to build a well-functioning WordPress website?

By Impact Media-November 21, 2024

Creating a well-performing website on WordPress involves a combination of strategic planning, design, and technical execution. In general, you can think of building a website in four big steps:

Step 1: Planning

1) Decide what the purpose of your website is: In order to build a well-functioning website, it is important to first define exactly what the purpose of the website is. What business functions it supports and how. Depending on what your business is, what industry you work in, and who your customers are, the optimal digital marketing solution for your company can take very different forms.

Some of the most common types of websites:

  1. Simple website (in English "onepager"). This website is extremely simple in its structure. Basically, it contains only one page, which provides a concentrated overview of the company, main services, team and contact details for sending inquiries, etc. A simple website is a good and inexpensive way to start digital marketing for small businesses that do not yet have a full digital presence. Think of a simple website as a digital business card and the first step towards creating digital visibility.
  2. Large website – most companies have a large website. These are websites that usually contain 10+ subpages and provide a complete overview of all the company's services, products, references and often even work processes. A large website is a suitable solution for most companies that have already been on the market long enough to create a significant number of customer references and a selection of products or services.
  3. Online store – It makes sense to build an e-shop if the company's goal is to automate the sale of products on a full scale. An e-shop differs from a regular website in that, in addition to the functionalities of a regular website, it also includes ordering and payment solutions. While the general goal of a regular website is to provide the visitor with enough information to motivate them to make an inquiry, the goal of an e-shop is to automate the sale of products throughout the entire sales process.

2) Choose the right hosting service and domain: Choose a reliable hosting service that offers WordPress-specific hosting. Secure a domain name that reflects your brand and is easy for users to remember.

When choosing accommodation, it is important to keep in mind:

  • Reliability: Make sure the service provider guarantees high reliability and minimal downtime.
  • Speed: Choose a hosting that offers fast loading times to ensure the best user experience.
  • Security: Check if the provider supports the latest security standards and offers regular website backups.
  • Customer support: Prefer a service provider that offers 24/7 support.
  • Price and scalability: Analyze the price versus the services offered and make sure you can change or upgrade your plan if necessary.

3) Installing WordPress and Elementor: After choosing a suitable hosting service and domain, install WordPress – most hosting services offer a one-click solution for this. Next, install Elementor, which makes it easy to create a website without coding:

  1. Install Elementor – Go to Plugins > Add New, search for Elementor Page Builder, click Install Now and Activate.
  2. Use Elementor – Create a new page (Pages > Add New), select Edit with Elementor, and design your site with drag-and-drop functionality.

Elementor offers both a free and paid version, which provides more design options and functionality.

4) Choosing a topic: A theme determines the visual style and user experience of a website. Choose a theme that fits your brand identity and is optimized for speed and SEO. To do this, go to Appearance > Themes > Add New, browse the available themes, or upload your own custom solution.

A good theme should be fast, mobile-friendly, and offer the necessary customization options. If you are using Elementor, it is recommended to choose an easily customizable and simple theme, such as Hello Elementor or Astra, which work seamlessly with the page builder. Step 2: Creating website structure and content

1) Creating a suitable website structure: In order to create a suitable website structure, you need to decide what information you need to provide to the visitor to motivate them to make a decision. In general, most websites are structured according to a fairly standard pattern and contain at least 5+ subpages.

Typical website structure:

  • Home page – contains general information about the company, services and products, team and references, and a contact form in the footer.
  • Team – this subpage outlines the company's core team and competencies, as well as direct contacts.
  • About the company – the page provides an overview of the activities, duration of the activity, and development.
  • References or completed work – provides an overview of the company's clients and the work performed, as well as evaluations of these works.
  • Contact – usually includes a contact request form and all other necessary contact information.
  • Calls to action (CTA) – these are buttons that are placed on all pages of the website and whose purpose is to motivate the visitor to make a decision. For example, to contact us, send an inquiry, purchase a product, subscribe to a newsletter, etc.

2) creating content texts (in English "copywriting"): Creating content for your website starts with understanding your target audience. You need to understand how your customers think and what information they are looking for. This is best understood by the sales people of any given company, who deal with customers and their recurring questions about products and services every day. Writing content (in English “copywriting”) is a science in itself, which can get infinitely complicated. But initially it makes sense to start from how the company already sells its services and products. The initial content for the website is nothing more than a daily conversation between salespeople and customers, adapted to the existing structure and design of your page. Simplicity, clarity and informativeness are the keywords to focus on initially.

3) Selecting images: Choosing images for your website is an important step that affects user experience and brand perception. It is important to choose high-quality, relevant photos that support your brand message and increase visual appeal. You should use original or copyrighted images to avoid legal issues. It is also wise to mix images downloaded from databases (in English „stock images“) with images you have taken yourself. This ensures the original look of your website.

4) Using videos: Using videos on your website makes your content more dynamic and engaging. One option is to look for high-quality videos that support your message and brand values. Another option is to have a video made that introduces your company, products, or services. Use copyrighted materials carefully, preferring original creations or licensed content.

Reasons to use videos on your website:

  • Increases engagement: Videos capture users' attention more effectively than text or images, thus increasing the engagement of page visitors.
  • Improves understanding: Videos allow complex ideas or products to be presented more clearly, helping to better convey messages and information.
  • Increases conversion rates: An engaging and informative video can effectively increase interest in a product or service, which in turn increases conversion rates on a website.

Step 3: Website building

1) Using the Elementor interface: Using the Elementor interface on a WordPress website provides an intuitive drag and drop interface that makes page design quick and easy. Offering a wide range of customizable widgets and template elements, Elementor allows you to create professional-looking websites without any coding skills.

2) Website optimization for mobile and tablet: Since roughly half of website visitors come via mobile and tablet, it is important that your website is optimized to work on these devices as well. WordPress offers a fairly simple and intuitive system for how to do this.

3) Website optimization for search engines (Search engine optimization or SEO): Like writing content, improving search engine indexing is a science in itself. Indexing in search engines is influenced by many different factors, from the structure of a website, to the technical and content optimizations made on the site, to what off-site links point to your page. Optimizing a website for search engines on a full scale is a long process, and the results cannot be predicted with any precision. However, there are some simple actions that, if implemented, can be considered „enough to get started“ with search engine optimization of a website:

  1. Choose appropriate keywords: Use keywords that have high searchability in Google search engine, but low competition, to describe products and services on your website.
  2. Put meta descriptions and titles: The title and meta description of each page should contain important keywords.
  3. Optimize page speed: Page speed plays a role in how quickly visitors leave (bounce rate), which in turn affects search engine evaluations of the relevance of your page and its content.
  4. Internal links: Use internal links to make navigation between pages easier.
  5. Connect Google Analytics and Search Console: Integrate Google Analytics and Search Console with your website to track traffic and identify potential SEO issues.
  6. Image optimization: Rename and add alt text to all images on your website using your target keywords. This will improve both search engine discoverability and website accessibility.

Step 4: Testing

Website testing involves running the website as a whole on all media (computer, phone, tablet) and with all the necessary features. It is also a good idea to use different people's devices, as a website may display and function differently when viewed on, for example, 5 different mobile phones.

Characteristics of a well-made website that should be tested on different devices (ideally on at least 5 people's devices):

  • Modern and clean design
  • User-friendly navigation
  • Charges quickly
  • Optimized to work on both phones and tablets
  • The content is clearly understandable and convincing
  • SEO-friendly structure
  • Security is guaranteed (HTTPS/SSL)
  • Easy-to-find contact information
  • Conveys the brand message accurately and precisely
  • Contains references to social media
  • Functional CTAs and contact forms
